The Pearl Poetry Slam

April is National Poetry Month. To celebrate, the Pearl Theater hosts its first poetry slam Thursday April 25 with doors opening at 6:00pm.

People have been performing poetry as long as there’s been language. Construction worker and poet Marc Smith wanted to breath new life into poetry so he partnered with the Green Mill, a Chicago club and former haunt of Al Capone. He drew on baseball and bridge terminology to create an event that emphasized performance and appealed to the audience. Poets have three minutes to perform an original piece they’ve written without any props, costumes or musical instruments. Judges score poems half on content and half on performance. The audience is encouraged to react vocally and openly to all aspects of the slam.

When the idea of a poetry slam was first brought up, the Pearl’s Jessica Tingley’s reaction was “I love the idea of a poetry slam! That would be amazing.”

There will be three rounds: Middle School, High School and Adult. The winners from each round will compete at the end of the evening to determine the overall winner. There will be cash prizes for winners in each round as well as for the overall winner.

The event will be free to all thanks to local sponsors, including the library. Library Director Craig Anderson is excited that a poetry slam is coming back to Bonners Ferry. The libary has a display featuring poetry books saluting National Poetry Month and the Pearl Poetry Slam.
