Pearl fundraiser, comedy show a bell-ringing success

At 1 p.m. Thursday, May 6, the bell began pealing at the Pearl Theater, prompting neighbors to grumble and signaling the start of a day of giving. By 6 p.m., when the doors opened for The Pearl’s first in-person show in a year, nearly a dozen people had stopped by to ask about the ringing, renew their memberships, make a donation to the Pearl Theater, or take a tour of the historic Pearl Theater, a 137 year old Bonners Ferry treasure.

The day culminated in an evening of comedy, with Ryan McComb opening and Phillip Kopczynski headlining with his new show, “Freed and Vaccined,” and both knocked the ball out of the park, leaving those in attendance in stitches. By the first act cancelled by COVID last year, no less.

“It feels like it was kind of meant to be, a year and month later,” said Pearl treasurer Jessica Tingley. “Phillip was booked to do the April Fools show 2020, one of the first shows cancelled due to COVID, and he and Ryan instead arrive this year with an evening of observations and hilarious jokes about what a year 2020 was.”

With tickets limited to 50 due to Stage 3 restrictions, a small crew of dedicated volunteers arrived early to polish the Pearl and arrange tables on the main floor to allow for social distancing.

Board member Heather Olson manned the café, which offered a selection of flatbread pizzas and yummy desserts, curated by the Pearl Theater’s newest board member, Serafina Dwyer.
While the show didn’t sell out, the delicious desserts did, and as Barb Rawlings, ticket taker for the evening commented, “the food was a hit and people seemed to enjoy themselves. A big thanks to everyone that made it happen.”

The Pearl board thanks all of the day’s generous donors and in particular Karen Pedey.

Karen donated at last year’s Idaho Gives fundraising event and took it a step further, making it a quarterly donation. May 6 marked a full year of giving to the Pearl Theater, making her a true Pearl superstar!

It is not too late to give to The Pearl and support its reopening. Tax-deductible donations can be made via Paypal and memberships are available on The Pearl website. For more information, email or call (208) 610-2846.
